< Return to Procedure List

Holter monitoring  is a continuous, twenty-four hour  electrocardiographic (EKG) recording of the heart’s rhythm.  The Electrodes are place on the chest area with leads attached to a small recorder.   It will take 15 minutes to have the monitor place on the patient.  The patient will keep a 24 hour record of daily activities and symptoms experienced within the 24 hours and return the next day to  have the monitor removed.

· Try to sleep on your back

· Don’t take a shower.  A sponge bath is OK

· Follow your normal routine.  Don’t avoid stress, work, or exercise

· If an electrode falls off or the unit makes noise, call to see what you should do.

In the diary:

· Write in the time of day for each entry you make

· Note each change in activity, including whn you take medicine

· Note any symptoms you feel

Your Event Monitor

After you are shown how to use your event monitor, carry it with you all the time.  When you feel a symptom, activate the monitor by pressing a button (writewatch style) or holding it to your chest (small box or credit card style).  Be sure to keep a diary.

In the diary:

· Write the time of day for each entry you make

· Note each change in activity, including when you take medicine

· Not any symptoms you feel

Using Your Monitor
